What to do if you've lost your car keys

Lost car keys are stressful but fixable. The steps that matter, and why a mobile locksmith beats towing to a dealer.

Realising you've lost your car keys is a horrible few seconds - you check every pocket twice, then the dread sets in. Take a breath. It's fixable, and unlike even ten years ago, you almost never need to tow the car to a dealer any more. A mobile auto locksmith can cut and code a replacement key right where the car sits. Here's the calm order to do things in.

1. Retrace, but with a time limit

Have a quick, sensible look - the obvious places: yesterday's coat, the bag you carried, the kitchen worktop, the car's footwell. Keys often turn up. But set yourself a time limit. If a thorough few minutes doesn't find them, stop searching and make the call. The clock matters because the longer the car sits somewhere public, the more of a target it is, especially if whoever finds the keys now has a way into it.

2. Call a mobile auto locksmith

A mobile locksmith comes to the car and cuts and codes a new key on-site - no recovery truck, no dealership waiting room, no leaving the car overnight. Tell them the make, model, year and registration and where the car is, and they'll quote and head out. They'll ask for proof you own the vehicle (V5C and photo ID) before they start - that's standard and it protects you.

3. Decide whether to erase the lost key

If the keys are simply lost, you may find them later. If they were stolen - or you genuinely can't be sure who has them - ask the locksmith to erase the lost key from the car's memory as part of the job, so it can no longer start the engine. A working stolen key is a way straight back into your car; erasing it closes that door. It's the right call whenever theft is a possibility.

Why not just go to the main dealer?

You can, but it's usually the slower, more expensive route. A dealer typically needs the car recovered to them, which means a tow and a car off the road for days, plus main-dealer labour rates. A mobile locksmith brings the same key-cutting and coding capability to the car and does it in one visit for most popular makes and models. For a lost-key situation - where you want to be moving again today - mobile is almost always the better first call.

4. Get a spare made once you're moving

Once you have one working key again, the cheapest insurance you'll ever buy is a spare. A spare key cut while you still have a working key costs a fraction of an all-keys-lost job. Keep it somewhere sensible - at home, with a trusted person, or in a secure place - and you'll never face this scramble again.

Quick questions

Can you make a key if I've lost all of mine?

Yes. With no original to copy from, we cut and code a fresh key at the vehicle and can erase the lost keys from the car's memory. You'll need to prove ownership with the V5C and photo ID.

Do I need the car towed to a dealer?

Usually not. A mobile locksmith can do the whole job at the car, which avoids the tow and the wait. It's almost always the faster, simpler route for a lost key.
