Lost a car key - the calm, correct fix
Losing your car key is stressful, but it's a problem with a clear fix. Instead of arranging a recovery truck to drag your car to a dealership and waiting days for a key, a mobile auto locksmith cuts and programmes the replacement right where the car sits - on your drive, at work or at the roadside.
The first step is a quick call. Tell us the make, model, year and registration and where the car is, and we'll give you a clear quote and an arrival estimate. When we arrive we check the car is yours - your V5C logbook and photo ID - and then we get cutting and coding.
How a replacement key is made on-site
- 1
Quote & arrival
You tell us make, model, year, reg and location. We quote and head out.
- 2
Ownership check
We confirm your V5C and ID before touching the car.
- 3
Cut the blade
A new key blade is cut to match your vehicle's lock.
- 4
Code the transponder
The chip is programmed so the engine recognises and starts.
- 5
Programme the remote
If your key has remote locking, we pair that too.
- 6
Test & tidy
We start the car and confirm everything works before we leave.
Should you erase the lost key?
If your key was simply misplaced, you may want to find it later - and a lost key that still starts the car is a security risk if it fell into the wrong hands. When we program the new key, we can also erase the lost one from the vehicle's memory so it can no longer start the engine. Mention it when you call and we'll include it in the quote.

Service-specific FAQs
Can you make a new key if I've lost mine?
Yes - we cut and code a replacement key at your vehicle, so there's no need to tow the car to a main dealer. We work on most popular makes and models. Call us with your registration to confirm and get a quote.
Do I need the original key?
No. We can produce a replacement even when the original is completely gone. We'll need proof you own the vehicle (V5C and photo ID) before we start. See our all-keys-lost service if every key is missing.
Will the lost key still work after you make a new one?
If the lost key is a transponder or remote key, we can erase it from the car's memory as part of the job so it can no longer start the engine - useful if you're worried the key was stolen. Tell us when you call and we'll include it in the quote.
How long does a replacement key take?
It varies by vehicle and key type, but most replacement keys are cut and coded on-site in a single visit. We'll give you a realistic timescale on the phone once we know your vehicle.
